ADMIRAL NAKHIMOV (Black Sea Shipping Co.)
Passenger liner built by the Bremer Vulkan yard in 1925 as Berlin for Norddeutscher Lloyd. She was withdrawn from transatlantic srvice in 1938 but did do some "strength through joy" cruises. A bolier explosion in July 1939 resulted in 17 deaths but the ship was repaired and fitted out as a hospital ship by the German Navy. She sank in February 1945 after hitting a mine off Swinemunde. Refloated by the Soviets in 1949 and renamed Admiral Nakhimov before undergoing an extensive refit/re-building at Warnemunde. She entered service on the Black Sea in 1957. She sank on 31st August 1986 8 miles off Novorossisk after colliding with a Soviet bulk carrier. 398 killed.
