ALCANTARA (Royal Mail Line)
Passenger liner built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, with 2 funnels, that made her maiden voyage in 1927 from Southampton to Buenos Aires. Rebuilt in 1934 with taller funnels and re-shaped bow. In 1939 was converted to armed merchant cruiser with her fore funnel removed. In 1943/4 she was converted to troopship and after refurbishment by Harland & Wolff she returned to commercial service, still with a single funnel, in 1948. Broken up in Japan in 1958.
