ALMDYK (Holland America Line)
Built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp, Pascagoula, Mississippi, and launched in 1942 as the cargo vessel Mormacpenn. She was then taken over by the US Navy and completed as the Bogue-class escort aircraft carrier USS Block Island, commissioned 1/1943. Then renamed Trailer and transferred to the Royal Navy who then renamed her HMS Hunter. Returned to the Americans in 1946 and in 1947 rebuilt as a cargo ship. Purchased by Holland America Line in 1948 and renamed Almdijk. Name adjusted to Almdyk in 1953. In 1963 she developed major engine trouble when in the Mediterranean and put into Naples where it was found she needed a new turbine. Instead she was sold for breaking up at Valencia.
