AQUITANIA (Cunard White Star Line)

Built by John Brown, she made her maiden voyage in May 1914 and completed 3 transatlantic round trips before being requisitioned as an armed merchant cruiser at the start of WW1. In 1915 she was converted into a troopship and in 1916 into a hospital ship. She returned to trooping in 1917, and returned to commercial service in 1919. She was requisitioned again in 1939, as a troopship, being converted at Sydney, Australia. She repatriated American troops after the war and then made 'austerity' voyages from Southampton to Halifax. She was broken up in 1950, the last active 4-funnelled liner. (Arundel Castle outlived her but had been rebuilt with 2 funnels in 1937).
