BRITANIS (Chandris Lines)

Passenger liner built in 1931 by the Bethlehem Steel Company, Quincy, Massachusetts, as Monterey for the Pacific services of Matson Lines. She served in WW2 as a troopship. In 1946 work started on her to recondition her for commercial service, but the work was stopped due to financial problems and she was laid up. In 1952 she was purchased by the US Government and put in the reserve fleet. Matson Line purchased her back in 1956, and she re-entered the Hawaii service in 1957 as Matsonia. Laid up again in 1962, she re-entered service at the end of 1963 as Lurline, replacing her sister of that name. In 1970 she was sold to Chandris and rebuilt for the Southampton-Australia service as Britanis. Cruising from 1974. In 1994 she was chartered by the United States as a floating barracks at Guantanamo Bay. Laid up in 1996. Sold in 1998 and renamed Belofin-1, she sank off South Africa in 10/2000, whilst under tow on her way to the ship-breakers in India.
