CALEDONIA (Caledonian Steam Packet)

Paddle steamer built by Denny, Dumbarton, as Caledonia for Caledonian Steam Packet, she entered service in 1934. She and her near sister Mercury were the first Clyde steamers to have concealed paddle boxes. Requisitioned as a minesweeper in WW2, renamed HMS Goatfell, and later converted to an anti-aircraft ship. She returned to commercial service in 1946, and was eventually withdrawn in 1969. Renamed Old Caledonia in 1970, she was purchased by Bass Charrington for use as a static floating restaurant on the River Thames, opening in 1972. She was badly damaged by fire in 1980 and then broken up.
