CARONIA (Cunard Line)

Built by John Brown, Clydebank, and launched by Princess Elizabeth, Caronia entered service for Cunard in 1949 with a Southampton to New York transatlantic voyage. She was designed for both transatlantic voyages and world cruising. She was withdrawn at the end of 1967 and sold to Universal Lines and renamed Columbia. In 1968 she was sold to Star Shipping and renamed Caribia. Some cruising but after a fire and then an engine room explosion she was laid up at New York. She broke in 3 pieces after running aground on Guam in 1974 whilst under tow to Taiwanese ship-breakers.
