DOMINION MONARCH (Shaw Savill & Albion)
Passenger liner built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson, Wallsend, she was the biggest ship ever built for Shaw Savill. She made her maiden voyage in February 1939, London-Southampton-Cape Town-Australia-New Zealand. Requisitioned in 1940 as a troopship, she was one of the few (6) that were able to sail without escort. Although she was returned to Shaw Savill in 1946 she did not resume her commercial service until December 1948. She was withdrawn in 1961 and in 1962 used as a hotel ship at the World's Fair in Seattle after which she sailed to Japan to be broken up.
