EDINBURGH CASTLE (Union Castle Line)

Passenger liner built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, that entered service in 1910 on the express South Africa service. Requisitioned in 1914 as an armed merchant cruiser, mainly operating in the South Atlantic she moved in 1918 to convoy duty in the North Atlantic. She returned to commercial service in 1919. Made her final voyage for the company in January 1939 and was then requisitioned again this time as an accommodation ship at Freetown, Sierra Leone. The Admiralty purchased her a few years later. In November 1945 she was towed out into deep water and sunk by gunfire.
