EL DJEZAIR (Cie De Navigation Mixte)

Passenger liner built at La Seyne that entered service in 1934 as El Djezair for Cie. De Navigation Mixte, Marseilles-Algiers service. Requisitioned as an armed merchant cruiser, she took part in the Norway Campaign in 1940 and later helped ship the French gold reserves to Dakar. Seized by the Germans in 1943, allocated to Italy and renamed Cassino. Re-taken by the Germans following Italy's capitulation she was bombed and sunk by the RAF near Sete 25/6/1944. Raised and broken up in 1950.
