ELLINIS (Chandris Lines)

Passenger liner built by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, Massachusetts. She made her maiden voyage in 1933, for Matson Lines as Lurline, a world cruise from San Francisco. She then became a favourite on the California-Hawaii cruise route. Converted to a troopship in 1941, being returned to her owners in 1946. Sold in 1963 to Chandris Lines, rebuilt and renamed Ellinis for UK- Australia service. After 1973 used principally for cruising. Laid up at Piraeus in 1980 and in 1986 sold for breaking up in Taiwan although some of her machinery was transferred to her sister Britanis.
