HMS ENDURANCE (Royal Navy)
Built in 1956 for the Lauritzen Line as Anita Dan, she was purchased in 1967 by the Admiralty for use as an ice patrol vessel and renamed HMS Endurance. As well as supporting the British Antarctic Survey her other duties included guard and patrol duties around the Falkland Islands. The announcement of her withdrawal in the early 1980s helped persuade the Argentine government that they could mount a successful invasion of the islands. She played a major part in the British task force operation to re-capture the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. She was finally decommissioned in 1991 after her hull was declared not strong enough to survive another trip to Antarctica.
