EVANGELINE (Eastern Shipping Corp)
Passenger vessel built by Wm Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, as Evangeline for Eastern Steamship Lines. Her first voyages in 2/1928 were Miami to Havanna, chartered to Clyde Line. She entered service for Eastern in 6/1928 between New York and Yarmouth (Maine). In 4/1941 she was chartered to Alcoa SS Co for service to Bermuda and Trinidad before being taken up by the US Army in 1/1942 for use as a transport. Returned in 1946 she was refitted as a cruise ship and resumed passenger service in the summe of 1947. Sold to Eastern Shipping Corp 11/1954.Sold to Eastern Steamship Corp,(Panama) in 1961. Sold to Yarmouth Cruise Lines in 1964 and renamed Yarmouth Castle. She caught fire and sank, west of Nassau, 13/11/1965 with the loss of 90 lives.
