HAMBURG (Hamburg America Line)

Passenger liner built by Blohm Voss, Hamburg, as Hamburg for the Hamburg-America Line. She was modernised and lengthened in 1933. She spent most of WW2 serving as an accommodation ship at Gdynia, but in 1945 helped in the evacuation of East Prussia. On 7th March 1945 she struck 2 mines off Sassnitz and sank. Raised by the Soviets in 1950 she was rebuilt and in 1954 when nearly complete as a passenger ship, and renamed Yury Dolgoruky, the decision was taken to convert her into a whale factory-ship, eventually entering service in 1960. She was withdrawn in 1976 and broken up in 1977.
