from a painting by William Quiller Orchardson (1832 - 1910)

HMS BELLEROPHON - 74 gun third-rate ship of the line built on the River Medway and completed in 1787. She took part in the Glorious First Of June, The Battle Of The Nile and The Battle Of Trafalgar. In 7/1815 while she was blockading the port of Rochefort, Napoleon came out to her to finally surrender to the British. Following this she was paid off and converted to a prison ship. Renamed Captivity in 1824. Broken up in 1836.
