NEURALIA (British India Line)
Passenger liner built by Barclay Curle & Co., Glasgow, that entered service in 1912, as the largest British India ship up to that date, London to Calcutta route. Served as a troopship, then a hospital ship in WW1. Returned to commercial service in 1920, now on the UK to East Africa route, with some trooping. In 1925 she was converted into a permanent troopship. During this time, in 1932, she made British India's first ever educational cruise. Continued as a troopship in WW2 and in 1944 carried a total of 27,000 troops to the Normandy beaches. She was sunk 1st May 1945, en route between Split and Taranto, when she hit an Italian mine, although Italy was by then an ally.
