NIEUW AMSTERDAM (Holland America Line)

Passenger liner built by the Rotterdam Dry Dock Company that was launched by Queen Wilhelmina in 1937 and entered transatlantic service in 1938. Originally she had a black hull. Laid up in New York at the outbreak of war in 1939, then cruising but when the Netherlands were invaded she was handed over to the Allies by the Dutch government in exile and converted to a troopship. Operated by Cunard White-Star she was fast enough to operate without convoy. Returned to commercial service in 1947 and was given a grey hull in 1957. In 1971 she became a full-time cruise ship. In January 1974 she made a final cruise from Port Everglades to Los Angeles, from where she sailed to Kaohsiung to be broken up.
