NORMANDIE (CGT / French Line)

Cie Generale Transtatlantique ocean giant built at Saint Nazaire. When she entered service as Normandie in 1935 she was the largest liner in the world. Vied with the Queen Mary for the Blue Riband. Laid up at New York at the start of WW2. After Pearl Harbor she was taken over by the US Maritime Commission and renamed USS Lafayette. She was destroyed by fire at New York whilst being converted to a troopship, capsizing under the weight of water pumped on to her. The wreck was raised and broken up in 1946/7.
