SANTA MARIA
Probably a medium sized carrack built 1460 at Pontevedra, Gallicia, as La Gallega. As Santa Maria she became the largest in the fleet that Christopher Columbus sailed to find the western route to the East Indies. She was wrecked 25/12/1492 at what is now Cap Haitien, Haiti, after hitting a sandbank with a cabin boy at the helm while the steersman had a sleep!
