HMS SHEFFIELD

C24. Southampton-class cruiser built by Vickers-Armstrong that was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1937. She had a prototype radar fitted in 1938 becoming the first Royal Navy vessel to be so equipped. In WW2 she saw service in the Arctic, Atlantic, North Sea and Mediterranean. In 1955 she played the part of HMS Ajax in the film "The Battle Of The River Plate". She went into reserve in 1959 but briefly returned to sea in 1960 before becoming an accommodation ship until 1964. She was then placed on the disposal list and broken up at Faslane in 1967. Her ships' bell hangs in Sheffield Cathedral.
