SOLENT QUEEN (Red Funnel Steamers)

Paddle steamer built by Barclay Curle, Glasgow, that entered service in 1889 on the Southampton to Cowes service and was the largest Red Funnel ship up to that date. She also operated excursions. Gutted by fire in 1893 she was completely rebuilt. Remained on service during WW1, and then spent summers based at Bournemouth. In WW2 she again maintained the Red Funnel service but did go to Dunkirk but was unable to load any troops. She was finally withdrawn in 1948 following boiler trouble and was then scrapped in Essex. Her compass binnacle is in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.
