VIKING II (Thoresen Car Ferries)
Built, 1964, as Viking II for Thoresen Car Ferries (later Townsend-Thoresen) services from Southampton to Le Havre and Cherbourg. In 1977 placed on long-term charter to British Rail as Earl William for Portsmouth-Channel Islands service, later from Weymouth. Chartered by Home Office in 1987 as detention centre at Harwich, for suspected illegal immigrants. Blown ashore during 'Great Storm' in October but refloated. 1988, Dun Laoghaire to Liverpool service. Laid up in 1990 with occasional use. Sold 1992 to European Seaways and renamed Pearl William. Renamed Mar Julia in 1996 and Cesme Stern in 1997, but was arrested at Bari later that year and remained there until 2001 when she was sold to Windward Lines for service in the Caribbean as Windward II, after a refit in Croatia. 2004, chartered to Government of Trinidad & Tobago and in 2007 sold to Treasure Queen Tours and rebuilt as a floating hotel, Ocean Pearl at Chaguaramas, Trinidad. Sold in 2011 and towed to Venezuela but in 4/2011 she was hit by a barge and sank.
